The year that has now passed us by saw the results of a global pandemic. With millions of jobs lost, tens of thousands from the UK specifically. This has however not affected the wealth of the UK’s richest; their wealth has frankly grown.

Sir Len Blavantnik, also known as the UK’s richest person, witnessed his wealth grow by £7.2 billion and it should be noted that some we quite charitable as well. Footballer Marcus Rashford topped that list and has given away over 125% of his wealth.

The wealth within this list is accumulated in a vast manner of ways and this ranges from being an inventor, owning real estate, dealing with chemicals and other large industries.

There are many stories to be told in these lists as can be seen by the tale of the Reuben brothers who have risen from rags to riches and now helm a property empire worth close to £21 billion.

It can also be considered that there is no greater irony than the simple fact that during the COVID-19 pandemic and the downward spiral of the economy led to massive haemorrhaging of jobs but also led to 24 new billionaire’s joining this year’s list.

With now, 171 billionaires in the UK, their combined wealth and assets are worth to be close to £597.269 billion and has risen by 21.7%

In terms of charitable donations, people were given £4.3 billion by people who are currently placed on the list.

Something quite noteworthy is how, “The global pandemic created lucrative opportunities for many online retailers, social networking apps and computer games tycoons,” as said by Robert Watts, who compiled the Rich List.

With many new billionaires on this year’s list, there is clear evidence that growth is still possible even during a global pandemic.
