It is not often that you get to hear the story of a fan who went too far and ended up right in jail, especially for the crime or racially abusing a footballer online. In a day and age where people feel like they can say anything online, there is now a precedent set that is likely to make others think twice about following in the footsteps of this racist.

The footballer Romaine Sawyers said that he had felt harassed and alarmed in the light of the abuse he was receiving after his team lost 5-0 to Manchester City.

Simon Silwood is said to have written that the midfielder Romaine Sawyers should win the ‘Baboon d’Or’. Silwood currently claims that this statement was not racial but simply stupid and that he had also been the victim of autocorrect that had altered to the word ‘buffoon’ to ‘baboon’.

The individual has currently been banned for life by West Brom and was convicted at Walsall magistrates court last month.

Passing sentence at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, the judge said: “This is, Mr Silwood, a serious offence. There is no place for racism or racist abuse online. This clearly in my view crosses the custody threshold. I assess the remorse you have for your actions as very minimal indeed. In my view it (the offence) falls into the category of greatest harm. We have to accept it had a wider impact and a substantial impact on Mr Sawyers. “

Silwood was also ordered to pay £128 victim surcharge and total of £1,000 in compensation and was charged after an investigation by the UK’s first dedicated hate crime officer within a football unit.

The prosecutor in this case stated that the message posted by Silwood was intentionally posted and was blatant racism.
