Following Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat at Everton, Cristiano Ronaldo has apologised for knocking a fan’s phone to the ground, apparently. Ronaldo appeared to swipe his hand towards the ground as he walked off the pitch and into the tunnel at Goodison Park, according to social media footage. According to witnesses, the 37-year-old knocked a fan’s phone out of their hand and it smashed to the ground.

“It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing. Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game. I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship,” said the Portugal football legend in an Instagram post.

The incident, which Manchester United has confirmed they are investigating, capped off a bad afternoon for the Premier League giants, who lost ground in the race for the top four. United are now seventh in the Premier League and face a greater chance of missing out on Champions League qualification next season, as they are six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. Everton had endured a miserable run that had seen them drop to just one point above the relegation zone, which is the part of a football division consisting of the three teams with the lowest number of points, before the visit of United, but Anthony Gordon’s first-half goal gave Frank Lampard’s side a crucial win and three valuable points. Ralf Rangnick’s United produced yet another underwhelming performance, falling six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, who defeated Aston Villa 4-0 later in the day.
